Lightning Oak Farm
Celebrating the Unique, the Opulent, and the Odd
The Lightning Oak
Sitting atop the highest point on the property and overlooking the Blue Ridge mountains, the Lightning Oak strikes a lonesome figure next to the stump of his fallen sibling. At the edge of the field, this Iconic 200-year-old White Oak rises up from the Virginia clay bearing the scars of a lightning strike it somehow survived. Shortly before I found this property, a lifelong childhood friend of mine passed away tragically amidst his struggles with PTSD from his service in Iraq. His burial at Arlington still fresh in my memory, I couldn’t help but feel a certain kinship with this lone marvel who had recently lost a lifelong companion. How better to honor a thing than to give it a name? Lightning Oak just stuck.

Struck By Lightning Design
Although we are engaged in some organic food production, my principal focus is dreaming up and making beautiful things out of locally harvested wood that are made to last for generations. Struck by Lightning seemed a logical extension of the farm and isn’t that an apt description of how creativity so often reaches its mark?
Foremost among my ethics is the belief that a healthy ecosystem is a holy and spectacular thing. A forest displays a sturdiness and efficiency we as a species have yet to rival. The use of waste as a necessary component of another complimentary systems growth approaches perfection. It is my belief we have an obligation to be good stewards of this magic and vital place we walk on. This is why I strive to use native species almost exclusively and support Sustainable forestry practices. and the use of native species almost exclusively.
